What is a TELUS Certified Pre-Owned phone?

A device returned to TELUS, then cleaned, inspected, functionally tested and restored to factory software in Canada before resale. Every one carries a one-year limited warranty. Phones bought on or after 24 October 2025 may also qualify for coverage beyond that year while an active TELUS or Koodo plan stays on them.

What "certified" actually means here

The word gets used loosely across the industry, so it is worth being specific about what TELUS does to these devices before they are resold.

  • Physically cleaned and disinfected, including camera lenses and buttons
  • Inspected for cosmetic defects, so it looks the part rather than merely working
  • Functionally tested — camera, display, every button, audio, vibration and battery
  • Network tested for full mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity
  • Data erased, factory reset, and the latest software loaded
  • Any replaced parts inspected by a technician and covered by the warranty

Warranty coverage

Every certified pre-owned device carries a one-year limited warranty against defects in materials and workmanship, running from the date of purchase. Phones bought on or after 24 October 2025 may also qualify for coverage past that first year, for as long as the device keeps an active TELUS or Koodo mobility plan on it — TELUS ties that extension to the phone's IMEI, so it survives being passed on. It is worth being precise about the limits: the extension is eligibility rather than a guarantee, it does not apply to phones bought before that date, and it is subject to parts availability and repair capability at the time you need it. Even so, it is the main thing separating this from a private used purchase, where you have no recourse at all.

Is a refurbished phone worth it?

Short answer: usually yes, if the warranty is real and the testing is documented — which is the difference between a certified device and a private used sale. We have written that comparison out properly, including battery health, what typically goes wrong and when buying new is the better call, in our guide to TELUS refurbished smartphones in Canada.

How it compares to buying new

A certified pre-owned device activates on the same plans, takes the same accessories and gets the same software updates as a new one. If you are replacing a phone you still have, it is worth pricing a trade-in against the certified price before deciding. The differences are that you are usually buying a device a generation or two old, availability depends on what has come back through the program, and the box contents can differ from a retail unit. If a specific model matters to you, call ahead — stock moves.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is a TELUS Certified Pre-Owned phone?

A device returned to TELUS, then cleaned, inspected, functionally tested and restored to factory software in Canada before resale. Every one carries a one-year limited warranty. Phones bought on or after 24 October 2025 may also qualify for coverage beyond that year while an active TELUS or Koodo plan stays on them.

Is a certified pre-owned phone the same as a used phone?

No. A used phone is sold as-is with no testing and no warranty. A certified pre-owned device has been inspected, functionally tested, restored to factory software and is covered by a limited warranty from the date of purchase.

How long is the warranty?

One year from the date of purchase on every certified pre-owned device. Phones bought on or after 24 October 2025 may then qualify for coverage beyond that year while the device keeps an active TELUS or Koodo mobility plan — that part is eligibility rather than a guarantee, and it depends on parts still being available and the repair being possible when you need it. Replaced parts are inspected by a technician and covered under the same warranty.

Can I put AppleCare+ on a certified pre-owned iPhone?

No. Certified pre-owned devices are not eligible for AppleCare+, though they can be covered by TELUS Device Care. Worth knowing before you buy if device protection is part of how you were planning to budget for the phone.

Can I get a certified pre-owned phone on any plan?

Yes. They activate on the same TELUS and Koodo plans as new devices, including EPP rates if you qualify.

Which models are available?

Stock depends on what has come back through the program, so it changes week to week. Call your nearest Bolt Wireless store or send us a message and we will tell you what is in.
