Switching From Another Carrier
Porting your number from Rogers, Bell, Fido or anyone else takes one visit if you bring the right things: your current bill, your account number and photo ID. What do I need to bring to switch to TELUS?
Your current bill, your account number from that provider, and government photo ID. The account number is the piece most people forget and the port cannot start without it. If you are bringing your own phone, make sure it is unlocked and bring it with you.
Can I keep my phone number?
Yes. Numbers port from any Canadian carrier. Do not cancel your old service before you come in — cancelling first can release the number and make it harder to bring across. Come to us with the account still active and we will handle the switch.
How do I know if I am on the wrong plan?
Look at your last three bills for two things: data you never used, and overage charges. Either means the plan does not match your usage. Bring the bills to any of our stores and we will go through them with you — there is no charge for the conversation and no obligation to change anything.
Should I choose TELUS or Koodo?
Koodo uses the same national network and suits you if you want no contract, prepaid billing, or you are new to Canada without credit history. TELUS suits you if you want device financing, a family account, or to bundle with home internet, TV or security. We sell both and will tell you which fits rather than defaulting to one.
Am I eligible for employer pricing?
Possibly, and most people who are eligible do not know it. TELUS Exclusive Partner Program pricing is available through many Canadian employers. Bring your work email or employee ID to any Bolt Wireless store and we will check your organisation against the current list before you sign up at standard pricing.
How to avoid roaming charges when you travel
Add a roaming pass before you leave, and switch data roaming off until you have. Charges start the moment your phone connects abroad without one.
Before you fly:
- Check your plan. Look up the roaming options for your destination. They differ by country and plan.
- Add a travel pass. Do it before departure, not at the airport in a panic.
- Turn off data roaming. Settings, Cellular or Mobile Network. Leave it off until your pass is active.
- Download offline. Maps, playlists and boarding passes, over home Wi-Fi.
Once you land:
- Use Wi-Fi first. Hotel and café Wi-Fi costs you nothing.
- Try Wi-Fi calling. Calls over Wi-Fi skip the roaming meter on most plans.
- Pause background refresh. Apps update in the background and burn data you never see.
